Problems with Cuisinart DCC-2000 Coffee-on-Demand 12-cup Programmable Coffee Maker

The Cuisinart DCC-2000 Coffee-on-Demand 12-cup Programmable Coffee Maker has received various complaints from its users. Most of the complaints are not on the taste of the coffee but on how it works which can be inconvenient to some users. Among complaints is the need for the entire lid to be flipped up whenever you put water and coffee as well as in cleaning it.

If you have a small kitchen counter or you put it under a kitchen cabinet, you have to pull it out first before you can flip up its lid. Water also tends to overflow while brewing and leaks when put on auto-brew even after its lever is pressed up. Other users also complained of its uncontrollable drip which usually starts in small drips up to dripping the whole 12 cups of coffee. The Cuisinart DCC-2000 Coffee-on-Demand 12-cup Programmable Coffee Maker’s coffee gauge can also be inaccurate at times.

My DC-2000 has been acting quirky this week- flashing the clean button (even after I cleaned it) and not allowing me to set the time on the clock. I did a very deep descaling yesterday and the unit is functioning well again. My husband and I share coffee-making chores, and he does not feel the need to rinse the coffee reservoir after each use… out of sight- out of mind? I wipe off lid condensation (which is considerable) and clean the reservoir. I suspect it is the condensation working its way into the machine’s innards that kills the electronics of the machine eventually, as someone else mentioned.
Um… the thing really does have a mind of its own though. We like it though, primarily because of NO carafe to break or clean… and the protracted hot nature of the brew inside the insulated tank reservoir. After an hour, the coffee does not taste like it’s been cooked.

Dont bother trying to get a replacement if it is out of warranty. I tried. No matter how much vinegar cleaning i did, it will not start. Get a different coffee maker and chock it up.

  3. Richard says

Has anyone gotten Cuisinart to replace this unit after the three year warranty has expired? Like so many of you, the power comes on ours but it doesn’t brew. Or it does brew, but only after several hours. But Cuisinart refuses to do a thing because the warranty has expired. All they offer are instructions on white vinegar cleaning, which we’ve done regularly from the day we purchased the unit. So I respectfully disagree with Marie, Cuisinart is NOT a great company. In fact, I have a mind to tell them where they can put their white vinegar!!!

  4. Jennifer says

OK..Update on my previous post…I poured vinegar in it and let it sit…after 3 days the display came back on. After 4 days I could actually brew the vinegar through..I brewed it twice and have had no problems since. I am sure its just a matter of time. I was told by another friend that I should run vinegar thru at least once every 3 months..I am willing to try to save my coffee maker..I do love it so..

Today, we just got given, this coffee maker for FREE at a garage sale, because when the guy plugged it in it wouldn’t work. He said that sometimes it would work, sometimes not. So far, the freebie wont work. So, Im gonna try the vinegar fix and see what happens. My husband was willing to take the thing apart, being free, and see if anything of the circuit board looked black. Nothing.. Let you know how it goes..

  6. Michael says

I have had my maker now for two years. SAME THING! At times it has no power. Other times it works. Most recently is not working. This is the longest it hasn’t had any power which prompted my search. I must say it must be this specific model.

  7. Jennifer says

If soo many people have the same exact problem then why isn’t Cuisinart doing something to fix this? When people find a good coffee maker they stick with it and tell all their friends. I wonder if Cuisinart understands that it works BOTH ways. We all love our machine when it works. It is supposed to be good quality and then will not power on after a year and a half of ownership?!?! I am starting to wonder about the other Cuisinart products I have… sham on you Cuisinart!!

  8. Marie says

I have also had the same problem with it just stopping to work. It happened to me after 2 years of use. I called 800-726-0190 (Cuisnart) and told them my problem with the serial number……and they are sending me a new machine. The only thing that I have to do is cut the cord off the broken machine and mail it in. WHAT A GREAT COMPANY!!!!!

  9. Donna says

I’m so bummed that I’ve read all these comments to find that my problem seems to be universal. After a week away in July, my DCC-2000 would not turn on. After a few days it started to brew, but stoped again after another week away (maybe it was mad at us…). And again this morning, no brew. Each time I took out my old reliable Mr Coffee, which also had a thermal carafe (less a broken lid). I considered purchasing another Coffee on Demand, but will reconsider after reading all of these posts…fool me once…

  10. Marcy says

Okay, this one is sort of funny. I was having the problem with my Cusinart DCC 2000 not finishing the brewing. Put in 4 cups and it makes one. I looked it up on the internet and found that others had the same problem. I only had this coffee maker for 2 months so I was cleaning it up to take back to the store I purchased it from and I pulled out the water filter. There was a cardboard barcode stuck to it. I bought the display model and they must of cut the barcode off of the box and dropped it in the water tank. It took 2 months to come out of hiding. Anyway, I’m happy to have a full pot this morning.

Bought first one in December 2007 – went out in 2008 and replaced under warranty. Just threw out second one which hasn’t worked for months – just died like everyone else’s. No warranty in effect, no repairs can be done and no help from Cuisinart in possibly sending a coupon or discount, etc. to buy another coffeemaker. Bought a Proctor Silex and it works just great and I paid $10. Thanks for listening.

  12. Pete says

The delivery truck ust dropped off our fourth (yes, that’s right, as in 4th) DCC-2000 coffee maker. The first three all experienced the same problem, which many of you folks have also experienced. The AC power seems to just quit on its own. And to locate the unit’s fuse is all but impossible, but I’m bound and determined to find it and bypass it.

Calling Cuisinart’s customer service has been the easy part. They answer promptly and don’t put up much of a hassle at all about sending me a replacement unit. It’s just tiresome to hear them preach their scripted advice, “Well, have you cleaned out the coffeemaker every (insert week, month, whatever) lately, sir? That’s why it automatically shut down for safety reasons.”

    BULLSHIT!

It makes great tasting coffee, does a good job maintaining the proper temp to avoid burning, and is pretty effortless when it comes to cleaning. So why can’t they simply re-engineer the power circuitry? It ain’t rocket science!

  13. Paul Posner says

I’ve had mine more than a year, and it has served me well, till this morning! After the first pot it went completely dead. After unplugging it and letting it cool down it revived. My guess is the unit either overheated and shut itself down or one of the thermistors has failed. Cleaning the unit with a vinegar solution hopefully will solve the problem. If the sensor has calcified it will get hotter brewing coffee than designed.

  14. Martin VM says

Ditto to all of the above – the unit just stopped being able to be turned on. No power to the unit.

  15. Tom Coleman says

My DCC-2000 worked for about 9 months and then stopped. A total power failure — not even an illuminated clock. Are there any service guides and replacement parts? Has anyone taken one of these machines apart and fixed it? Thanks. T.C.

  16. Elizabeth Starrett says

I have had my dc 2000 since December. I have not used it for about two weeks and when I tried to brew coffee today, nothing. I am very frustrated. I am about to pull out my 10 year old Mr. Coffee!

  17. Dave Dubrawsky says

The Short Version: I’ve just read the comments before me. And the bottom line is that I’ve got the same problem.. again. This DCC 2000 is beginning to show the identical symptoms to his older brother, who was replaced less than a year ago. And that one lasted about 2 years. So, being a “coffee breathing” Quality Assurance Engineer who has naturally seen many many coffee makers (none as short-lived as this one), I’ve opted for a Bunn Commercial unit.. no bells, no whistles, just Made in U.S., Stainless Steel, Grind the coffee and put it in the basket.. pour the water.. and 3 minutes to 10 cups of hot joe.. bingo. Yup, the initial investment is high, but how many coffee makers do YOU wanna buy in the next 10 years? Nothing against China (which is where most of the $10 to $150 coffee makers are made), but they don’t even come close to the Quality of Germany, Holland, Switzerland, or the U.S…. where you DO pay more.. but you pay for Quality and Service. And like most of you, I “banked” on the Cuisinart name when I bought the DCC 2000… No Longer.

  18. Karla Keller says

I have experience the same problems with my DCC-2000 and I already have the refurbished one. No one seems to have any integrity when it comes to customer service. They have a proud name in the beginning and flop on the future products and continue to rebuff people when the product does not work properly. Mine will not brew on demand or otherwise.

  19. Wendy Gilbert says

does anyone know how to turn this maker on if the spring loaded brew button won’t make the coffee brew
I love this coffee maker but would love it more if it brewed. Sometimes it will now it won’t

  20. Faye Woodall says

Our second DCC-2000 is not working after plugging into several outlets. This has happened both times after we had coffee maker for a year.

  21. Steve says

Same as all the others. After about 6 months it started acting up. replug and it would work for awhile. then replug every day. now its dead. put my 11 year old capresso back in use. terrible quality on this product and made a bad name of cuisinart to me now.

  22. Russ Benson says

I am on DCC-2000 #2 and the 2nd one is doing the same thing the 1st one did which is just stop working & act like there’s no power to the machine. We have to unplug it and plug it back in and it usually will work again but reading the various comments about this coffee maker it is obvious this is a flawed product and I would caution against buying one of these. If Cuisinart fails to send me another, this one is getting whacked with my sledgehammer then thrown in the trash but not before I make a scathing video and post it on YouTube about this crappy coffee maker.

  23. Rich says

It doesn’t “amaze me” that a coffee maker can make a great cup o’ joe in the 21st century. What does amaze me is that a coffee maker can fail to work at all so routinely! I can’t believe that the electronics are so buggy in the DCC 2000: sometimes I can set the Auto On, sometimes I can’t; sometimes I can turn it on manually, sometimes it won’t even do that! Same with the clock settings. This is my second DCC 2000, I didn’t bother with customer service for the first one either, just thought it was a fluke. I’m embarrassed for Cuisinart for sending out products like this.

  24. Kathy says

After having the DCC2000 for about 1-1/2 years, one day it just quit working – looks like it isn’t even getting power as there is no time on the clock. I called Cuisinart’s customer service number. The woman explained to me that I had not cleaned it enough with vinegar (I had followed the directions in the owner’s manual) and to pour straight vinegar into it and let it sit overnight. Then to try plugging it in again and see if the clock works. She said if it didn’t work to try it again and let it sit overnight again. She said if the clock works, to then run vinegar & water through a cycle, then plain water. She stated if that didn’t work that they would then accept it for replacement since it is still under warranty. I have a science/technical background. I don’t get the connection between the clock not working and possible calcium build-up on the heating element”?? It does not compute.

Just like all the other comments about the DCC 2000, we play coffee roulette with our machine on a regular basis. It seems to work properly in spurts which may last up to a month at a time. Then out of nowhere, the coffee brewing doesn’t start up. After turning it on and off a few dozen times, plug and unplug, a wack on the side of the brewer and a small prayer! it starts sometimes. Definately a switch or thermal fuse defect. Also can’t change timer setting.
Mr. Coffee with your paper filters here we come.
Wish I had read this before purchase.
Will no longer purchase any product under this brand.

  26. Barb says

I’ve had mine for a year now, it works just fine, without any problems. I just have a few minor complaints as mentioned in the review.
When you lift the lid to add water or clean it out, there’s always water built up and it will spill on the counter. It’s also a bit of a pain to fill the reservoir, it always results in a puddle of water on the counter.
Also just to note, make sure you clean out the tank once you’re done with your coffee, if the coffee dries up inside the tank it is extremely difficult to get completely clean. Also as stated before the “coffee gauge” is not accurate, but I’ve realized that it’s empty when it says it is between 1/8 to 1/4 full, not a big deal.
Other then those points I am happy with this coffee maker, it does produce a great tasting cup of coffee and the last cup is as good as the first and it’s never burnt.
Overall I am pretty happy with it, I’ve just learned to deal with the wet counters.

We have had the very same problems with our DCC 2000. Our second one just died like the first.
My husband just threw the thing in the trash today. Their 3 year warranty doesn’t mean squat when you have to pay for the shipping each time & they just send you another bad one. The warranty does not start over on each coffee maker, it goes from the date of your first purchase. We will never buy a cuisinart again!!!

  29. Danielle says

Don’t buy this coffee maker!!!! I have had the same problems with mine. I have bought two of the same model because I loved the coffeemaker, thinking it was just a bad coffee maker for my first purchase. However after going through 2 of them. I will not make the same mistake again! Someone from Cuisinart should do something to reimburse people for their trouble and money!

  30. Robert says

We’ve just seen our second DCC 2000 die out. Both times, same results, no activity. This second unit is less than 1 year old and Cuisinart is replacing it. We’ve been given an option on 2 different models and although we’ve loved the on-demand feature, we’ll opt for a different model. I think it was said earlier that condensation from the lid may find its way into the machine causing the machine to be unresponsive. The lights come on but nobody’s home.

  31. Ruth says

I too have the same problem with the DCC 2000. One day it just stopped working. With a 3-year warantee on the product, I sent in all the necessary paperwork, a check for $10.00, and the coffeemaker on April 4, 2009. I used the CURE number assigned to me by the company, and have emailed them after each month passes. All I have gotten from this once respectable company are computer generated messages telling me that the item is out of stock at their warehouse and my name is “on the list and I should be receiving my new replacement coffeemaker SOON. How long is SOON. I get no where with these people. They now have my coffeemaker and my $10.00 and all I’ve gotten from them is excuses. Is there anyone else having this problem?

My coffee maker won’t turn on..I got it as an Anniversary gift last August and lately have had problems getting it to turn on.
This morning it won’t come on at all.I have tried unplugging it and plugging it back in…nothing..it’s dead.

  33. Drema Samples says

I have had my Coffee machine for almost one year..my problem is it shuts off sometimes as soon as the coffee is made, and now today IT WON’T COME ON AT ALL! I have tried evereything to get it to work. I noticed the last few weeks that it was getting hard to get it to work but today it is dead..won’t come on at all.It was an Anniversary gift from my daughter in August of last year.

I purchased the DCC-2000 coffee maker after having the same problem with the Grind & Brew coffee maker. After about 1 month, I have the same problem with the DCC-2000, it does not brew all the water in the resevoir. This is very frustrating. I am waiting for a receipt from the store I bought it and am hoping to send the coffee maker back to Cuisinart to be repaired or for a replacement. I think next time I am going to buy a $19 coffee maker.

  35. Maryann says

I have purchased 2 DCC-2000 coffee makers and have had problems with both. For some reason after several months they stop being able to know that they have not dispensed all of the water in the resevoir. When I try to make 6 cups it will only dispense maybe 2 cups of water and then beep saying that the coffee is ready. I have tried to clean with store bought coffee maker cleaner and also with white vinegar with no results. I love the coffee maker and that is why I bought the second one thinking that it was just the first one with the problem. If anyone can help me with this problem please let me know. Thanks
