How To Be Officially Accredited As A Barista

So you’ve been working at Sal’s Espresso House for ten years, your customers line up around the corner every morning, and your double choc latte is considered an official tourist attraction in your hometown. So how do you now become an officially accredited Barista and confirm your caffeine dominance?

Well, you could just start calling yourself a Barista. After all, it’s not like anyone in line will care if you have a certificate or not that proves it. Heck, the kids at Starbucks call themselves baristas, and they’d be lost without their ‘how to make a mocha’ manual.

But if you want to do it right, you need to talk to the body that handles specialty coffee certification worldwide. That used to mean two separate organizations: the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) and the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe (SCAE). In 2017 they merged into a single global body, the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), which now runs the annual World Barista Championships (it has since 2000), administers the recognized certification programs, and supports a network of national chapters and Authorized Trainers around the world. SCA membership opens up the same kind of professional resources the old SCAA offered: training, cupping workshops, market research, an annual conference, and a directory of roasters, importers, and equipment suppliers.

What makes the SCA worth joining if you’re a coffee pro is their Coffee Skills Program, the recognized industry certification standard. It covers six skills modules (Barista, Brewing, Green Coffee, Roasting, Sensory Skills, and Introduction to Coffee), each available at Foundation, Intermediate, and Professional levels. You learn and test under an Authorized SCA Trainer (AST); the global trainer directory is on sca.coffee.

No matter where you are in the world, the SCA and its affiliates have a local trainer who can walk you through the process.

The current path to SCA barista certification

If you’re starting today, the path is straightforward:

  1. Find an Authorized SCA Trainer (AST) near you. The SCA’s official directory at sca.coffee lists trainers worldwide. Courses are offered in person, online, or as a hybrid.
  2. Start with Barista Skills Foundation. The entry-level module covers roughly 6 hours of training plus a written exam and a practical assessment. Cost typically runs $200-$400 USD depending on the trainer and region.
  3. Add Brewing Foundation and Sensory Skills Foundation. Most working baristas pair Barista with Brewing and Sensory; together they cover the technical skills most cafés actually want.
  4. Progress to Intermediate and Professional levels. Each module has three levels. Completing all six modules at Foundation level (or earning 100 points across the system) qualifies you for the SCA Coffee Skills Diploma, the recognized industry credential.
  5. Consider entering the World Barista Championship. Each national SCA chapter runs a selection competition; winners advance to the WBC. It’s the highest-profile track for serious competitors.

For an at-home coffee enthusiast, formal certification is overkill. For anyone who wants to work professionally in specialty cafés, restaurants, roasteries, or coffee education, the SCA Coffee Skills credentials are the recognized standard.

Historical directory: country-level endorsing bodies (~2010)

The directory below was compiled in the early 2010s, before SCAA and SCAE merged into the unified SCA. Many of the listed contacts have changed in the years since. It’s preserved here as a historical reference. For current barista certification in your country, start at sca.coffee and search the Authorized SCA Trainer directory for your region.
