Some of the best coffee projects we know of got their start on Kickstarter. From...
I have to start by saying that the Technivorm Moccamaster coffee maker is hands-down the most unusual looking coffee machine I’ve ever seen. And I’ll follow that comment by adding that it also makes the best cup of coffee I’ve ever had the pleasure of drinking in my own kitchen. Or anywhere, come to think of it!
I can see why the marketing materials for the Technivorm coffee brewer specify that it is the most-requested item by European brides looking for wedding gifts, and given its hand-crafted Dutch origins, I suppose the Europeans got a jump on the rest of us in discovering it. That’s okay, though–I’ve discovered it now, and it is definitely taking up permanent residence on my kitchen counter.
Product Features:
The thermal carafe on the Technivorm Moccamaster coffee maker actually does its job–my son brews when he gets up at six for school, and when my husband (who works late shifts) wakes up after ten, he still doesn’t need to reheat his coffee. That’s saying a lot for a guy who’s picky about his coffee temperature. Add to that the fact that it’s not getting “cooked” further by sitting on a hot plate for hours, and even that later cup of coffee is better than just “palatable.” I didn’t think it would pour well when I first looked at it–there’s no “vee” shape on the carafe as you expect from most pouring devices–but as it turns out, the designers new what they were doing. With its lid on, the thermal carafe pours beautifully, and with less dripping than a lot of the standard carafes I’ve tried previously.
We had been accustomed to programmable coffee makers that start brewing on a timer, and I was hesitant about the lack of programming functions on the Technivorm Moccamaster coffee maker. Once again, though, my doubts were dispelled when we realized how quickly this heats up. A copper heating coil has the water hot in minutes, and I notice that the online reviews of this machine all make a fuss about the perfect brewing temperature it achieves. I confess I’m not so savvy about such matters myself–but what I can tell is that I love the cup of coffee it makes, both in flavor and in temperature, the Technivorm coffee maker is a winner against every machine I’ve ever owned.
With its unusual configuration, the Technivorm Moccamaster coffee maker does take up more counter space than your “average” coffee maker, but it also sports a nice long cord which has helped out, enabling us to position it in the most useful spot without worrying about proximity to an outlet.
We’ve also been enjoying the new (to us) fun of grinding our own beans. To be honest, we hadn’t really thought about it before, but the instructions with the Technivorm coffee maker strongly recommended using freshly-ground coffee, and we’re discovering what a difference that makes as well. I’ve spent years buying cans of already-ground coffee, and we’re getting a lot more pleasure out of trying the different beans from our supermarket, and grinding right before we brew. What an amazing difference–between the quality difference produced by the Technivorm coffee maker itself, and the changes we’ve been prompted to make by owning it, coffee in our household has never been more enjoyable.
