Melitta Mill & Brew Smart Coffee Maker
The Melitta Mill & Brew Smart Coffee Maker appeared to be a great machine in the catalogue and the features were impressive. The coffee maker was described as 10-cup programmable one that ground and brewed coffee automatically. There was a special LCD display with animated coffee & region-specific weather information from MSN Direct via FM signal, with no need for any setting up, or subscription, or Internet connection. The coffee maker had 7 grind options with adjustable strength. Brew could be paused and the warming plate had auto shutoff provision. Size was compact at 8 by 11 by 14 inches, with a 1-year limited warranty. Even though the price was higher compared to other brands, the features originally seemed to justify the price.
The machine was delivered in the shortest possible time, but the trouble started when we actually started using the coffee maker. The first brew yielded coffee of great quality and then the machine stopped, going back to display the weather screen. Had to wait for an hour till the warming plate shut off automatically.
Reason was simple; the metal plate that covered the buttons slipped and the buttons got stuck. Could not turn off the machine or press the up/down timer buttons. The 7 grinding options also failed to work properly.
Immediate replacement was given when complained about the first coffee maker, but the same problems continued. We should have purchased a separate coffeemaker and a separate weather station. The 2 separate pieces would have cost about the same price as this one, which is quite high at about $150. It looks like the manufacturers concentrated too much on the design of the weather station that they did not notice the engineering defects in the coffee maker. We would not recommend the Melitta Mill & Brew Smart Coffeemaker to anybody. Go for a separate coffee maker and a separate weather station. They just do not seem to work together.

Mine works great. I moved overseas an left it in a box for 2.5 years. Now I’m back and it works terrific. I’m surprised you don’t mention the grind-to-brew feature or “smart mill” which I still think is pretty incredible. That feature, plus the latest roast from Intelligentsia and I’m ready to take on anything the world has to offer.

I absolutely love my Smart Brew. The heating element is broken and that model has been discontinued. I have been searching all over the internet for one…new or used. Can’t get it repaired either as parts arent available!!Anyone not love theirs…I would buy it off of you! I miss the MSN news/weather reports etc!!!!!
