There is a proprietary coffeepot cleaner that is very effective in removing the film, but difficult to find and expensive. It contains soda ash, a chemical used to raise the ph in swimming pools, and can be purchased inexpensively any place pool supplies are sold. A tablespoon or two dissolved in cold water is adequate for the 12 cup machine. Run it through the regular cycle and follow with 2 rinse cycles.

You clean a coffee pot because the oils clinging to the sides of the pot create a bitterness in future brewings. This has been scientifically proven time and again!

I've had my Santos Electric Vacuum Coffee Maker for one and a half years and I've always cleaned the funnel with soap and water and I also bought a small brush to clean the pipe end. I don't have a scratch on it and the coffee is just as good as it was when I bought it.
